American singer and songwriter Rachel Ashley Platten was born on May 20, 1981, and raised in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. Her musical endeavors began at the tender of age of five when she started studying classical piano. In high school, she sang in the school’s singing group and first tried her hand at guitar. She attended Trinity College, where she was a member of the school’s all-female a cappella group, Tinitones. While she was in Trinidad in 2002 on a study abroad program, she provided backup vocals for a friend‰Ûªs band during the International Soca Monarch finals. More than 80,000 people were in attendance, and the performance gave her the motivation to pursue music full time. After she graduated college, she moved to New York City and played with Dayz of Wild, a Prince and Sly and the Family Stone cover band. She then sang her own songs around Greenwich Village before touring the country. She wed Kevin Lazan in 2012.
