Lorenzo Jerald Patterson, also known as MC Ren, was born on June 1, 1969 in Compton, California. He and his three siblings grew up in Compton with their parents. Exposed to the street life of Compton at an early age, Lorenzo joined a local street gang called the Kelly Park Compton Crips. Future N.W.A. member Eazy-E was also a member of the Kelly Park Compton Crips. Patterson eventually left the gang due to the lack of money he was making. During high school, Lorenzo developed an interest in music and began writing his own music. Initially Lorenzo planned on joining the army, however he changed his mind after watching the 1987 hit movie “Full Metal Jacket.” Focusing on his musical career, Lorenzo and a friend formed a hip hop group called Awesome Crew 2. The two of them performed at local venues in their neighborhood.

Also during high school MC Ren teamed up with his childhood friend Eazy-E to focus on their rap careers. Eazy-E signed MC Ren to Ruthless Records in 1987. Lorenzo then began writing songs for Eazy-E and was eventually added as a member of N.W.A. The group’s debut album experienced a lot of success. However, the group’s success did not last and the members of N.W.A. eventually parted ways. After N.W.A.’s tumultuous split, MC Ren began focusing his attention on his career as a solo artist. He released his first song in 1992 and gained instant success. His debut song reached platinum status in two months. In the later part of 1992, Ren began recording his debut album. The album sold over 300,000 copies during the first month of its release. Over the next few years MC Ren experienced continued success. He continued to release new music and formed his own record label. MC Ren is currently working on another album that he is expecting to release later this year.
